Subject Guide: Music Education: How to Search for Books on Teaching Music and Music Activities

A guide to find resources for classroom music activities and lesson plans.

Terms to Use for Searching

To find teaching ideas for Elementary and Music Teachers:

Go to the library web page (www.mnstate.edu/library) and select Curriculum Materials Center on the drop-down menu next to the search box called Dragon OneSearch. Try these search terms:

  • School music -- Instruction and study
  • Music in education
  • Music teachers
  • School music -- Instruction and study
  • Music -- Instruction and study
  • Education, Preschool -- Activity programs
  • Early childhood education -- Activity programs

To find Music and Learning Activities for children, search with these terms.

  • Children’s songs
  • Dance for children
  • Finger play
  • Games with music
  • Humorous songs
  • Rhythm -- Study and teaching
  • Singing games

Song Picture Books

Song picture books naturally include movement activities.

Go to the library web page (www.mnstate.edu/library) and select Curriculum Materials Center on the drop-down menu next to the search box called Library Onesearch. 

To search for children's songs

  • Enter name of song
  • Examples:   If You’re are Happy and You Know It; I Know an Old Lady; Old MacDonald Had a Farm, or Knick-Knack Paddywhack.
  • These books will be found in the Curriculum Materials Center (CMC) on 2nd floor in the Easy section and the Nonfiction section.
  • Limit to Audio under “Resource Type" on the left side of the screen to get songs on CD.

 

There are many picture books with music themes. 

  • Go to the library web page (www.mnstate.edu/library) and select Curriculum Materials Center on the drop-down menu next to the search box called Library Onesearch. 
  • Use a keyword search for a variety of musical terms.
  • Examples: orchestra, jazz, symphony, band, singing, trumpet, opera, drums, etc.
