Interlibrary Loan

Instructional guide for Interlibrary Loan.

What Library Services are available to Distance Education patrons?

As a Distance Education Student registered at MSUM, you are able to request MSUM-owned materials be mailed to you at your home.

You are required to mail them back to MSUM at your expense or return them in person. For some patrons, there is the option to return them to a participating Minnstate library, and have them returned via consortium shuttle. Please contact ILL for more information about this option.

We will also copy articles from journals that MSUM owns and send a PDF to your email.

Please use the Interlibrary Loan form to request items to be delivered to you. Be sure to include a comment on each request, identifying yourself as a Distance Ed student.

How do I log in to the MSUM Library website?

To log in to the Library Homepage, Click on the My Account icon. On the next screen choose Login Using StarID and type in your StarID and Password.  This process will make it possible to view full-text documents from off-campus.

What if MSUM doesn't own what I need?

Interlibrary Loan Services are available to you as a Distance Education student.

You may request both books and articles to be delivered to you.

When you make an ILL request as a Distance Ed student, please be sure to include a Note on each ILL request identifying yourself as a Distance Ed student.

You do not need to include your actual address on each request as long as it is current in your library record. You can verify or change your home address in eServices.

How do I Request an ILL as a Distance Education student?

To request items from your MSUM Library account as a Distance Education student:

  1. On the Library homepage, select Interlibrary Loan under Services.
  2. Click "Request a Book, Article, DVD, or CD".
  3. For Citation Type, select Book (for books, CDs, or DVDs) or Copy/Article (for journal or magazine articles).
  4. Enter as much information as you have about the material you are requesting. The title is required, but the more information you provide about the item (such as ISBN, publication year, or edition), the easier it is for us to locate it.
    1. If you only need a specific chapter or page range from a book, please include that in the form.
    2. If you have information that does not fit in the citation fields provided, please include it in the Notes field.
    3. Indicate in the Comment field of every request you make that you are a Distance Ed student.
      1. If your mailing address is different than the address on file, please include that information in your note. Please update your address in eServices as soon as possible.
  5. Read the Notice of Copyright, and click the radio button to acknowledge.
  6. Click Submit Request.
  7. Your request will appear in your My Requests and will be processed by ILL staff.

When your request is fulfilled:

  • Digital materials will be emailed to your MSUM email, either with a PDF attachment or further instructions on how to access your request.
  • Physical items will be mailed to the address on file in your Library account.
    • When the items have been received by the library, an automated email is sent indicating that your materials are ready for pickup. You can ignore this email, or you can reply to it reminding us to mail your materials.
