Interlibrary Loan: How to request an ILL

Instructional guide for Interlibrary Loan.

How do I request something through ILL?

ILL Requests may be made directly through your library account or from our library databases

To request through your MSUM Library account:

  • Log in to your Library account:   https://mplus.mnpals.net/vufind/MyResearch/UserLogin
  • On the right side of the page, under My Account, select the type of media you would like to request. For a book, CD, or DVD/VHS click on “Book Request.” For a copy from a journal, periodical, newspaper, etc. click on “Article Request.”
  • Complete the blank form to the best of your ability. The more information you provide about the item, the easier it is for us to find it and the quicker we will be able to get it for you. If you have information that does not fit in the usual citation fields, please include them in the “Notes” field.
  • If you are a Distance Ed student, be sure to include that information in the "Notes" field of every request you make.
  • Click “Submit Request.”
  • Your request should now appear in your “Outstanding Requests” queue.

To request through our DATABASES:

  • From the library homepage, click on Research Tools. There are links to the MnPals Catalog as well as our Database List.
  • If you are looking for books, the MnPals Catalog can quickly find books that are available in MN (they will get here the soonest!). You can also search in WorldCat for books from around the U.S. However, be aware that they can take up to 14 days to arrive.
  • If you are searching for articles, our Database List can narrow down your search by subject or topic.
  • Once you have found an item you need, click the “Interlibrary Loan,” “Request Item,” or “ILL Request” button that is generally right below the citation.
  • Log in to your library account if you have not already done so. If you are logging in at this point, you will need to use your Library 14-digit Barcode (20104xxxxxxxxx) or Dragon ID (TRMxxxxxxxx) and password (usually your last name in ALL CAPS) instead of your StarID. Both of these numbers can be found on your Dragon Card
  • Verify that the request page has been filled in correctly. Some or all of the citation for the item being requested should fill in automatically.
  • Add additional information if necessary.
  • If you are a Distance Ed student, be sure to include that information in the "Notes" field of every request you make.
  • Click “Submit Request.”
  • Your request should now appear in your “Outstanding Requests” queue.
